Futuristic fabrications

A sci-fi artist working from a backyard shed in Central Otago is turning stuff no one wants into things that are sought after across the globe.
Sean Boyd uses anything that takes his fancy, from light fittings and plumbing parts to typewriters and old vacuum cleaners, to make futuristic fabrications which include ray guns, life-sized robots, jetpacks and other cosmic curiosities.
“The satisfaction is in finding parts, imagining outcomes and working out how they can fit together,” says Sean, who gets most of his raw materials from the local recycling centre, Central Otago WasteBusters. “I fill the back of the car for about $35. I think I’ve got more waste here than the waste station,” he says, looking round at the piles of paraphernalia in his humble garage in Clyde.

With the Pacific Ocean rolling to shore just across the road from his shed at Wainui Beach, avid surfer and passionate sheddie, Stan Scott, is never too far from his two favourite places.
As far as careers in the building trades go Stan’s has been one out of the box, driven largely by his insatiable curiosity and his never-say-never attitude. Building he says, has taken him places he never dreamed of going. Stan is a familiar face to many Kiwi’s. He has built and presented on a raft of TV renovation shows; is the current brand ambassador for Mitre10 and has even managed a few how-to spreads for us at The Shed.
When he’s not busy planning, building, filming and fronting Mitre10’s web based DIY series’ or giving instore presentations across the country, Stan is home juggling his own building jobs with personal projects and family life.

We visited and wrote about the impressive Pleasant Point Railway & Historical Society in South Canterbury, in The Shed September/October 2020 Issue 92.
Sadly, we just couldn’t squeeze in all the great photos we shot for the article into the magazine. As you will now see, these unpublished photographs are just too good to leave sitting on our hard drive so we felt we just had to share them with readers.

This years’ show was held at the same venue as last year in the historic Parnell Comunity Centre at 545 Parnell Road on the weekend of 12 and 13 October.

The 2018 Auckland Blade Show in Parnell this weekend was a huge success. Over 25 knife makers from all over NZ took stands as well as a shop from Gameco Artisan Supplies. A steady stream of visitors enjoyed an awesome display of great Kiwi knife making with no exhibitor quite like another. Organiser Brent Sandow promised us all we won’t have to wait as long for the next event which will require a larger venue to accomodate all the knife makers that couldn’t attend this 2018 Auckland show. If you are a fan of knives and knife making, do not miss the next show.

Extra unpublished photos of a Plymouth Superbird Muscle car restoration

It took motor engineer Michael Wolfe over 1100 hours to fully restore this rare Plymouth Super Bird muscle car for its Taranaki owner. We featured the rebuild in The Shed Issue 78 and these shots are all the photos we couldn’t squeeze into the printed article. Enjoy.
